Madonna Opens A Pediatric Center In Malawi & Names It After Her Daughter
Madonna takes the cake for this one. She is warming hearts once again but it’s not due to her music this time. The Pop Mogul opened a pediatric center in Malawi, Africa. The opening for Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery took place Tuesday. She wants to ensure kids in Malawi grow up with proper health facilities.
Madonna has always been very open about her adopted children. She named the hospital after her daughter Mercy James. CNN reported the pediatric center is the first of it’s kind in the country. It was funded by a charity she started back in 2006 “Raising Malawi.”
The star was with her Malawian children at the event where she spoke about the importance of the center.
"The Mercy James Center remains not only a world-class intensive care hospital, but also a superior learning environment to train the next generation of Malawian healthcare workers," Madonna said. "This is as much about healing as it is about empowerment."
The foundation began the same year she adopted her son David Banda, now 11 years old, from the same country. Since adopting both Mercy James and David Banda, she added twins Esther and Stella to her family earlier this year.
Madonna’s daughter Mercy gave a brief speech at the ceremony saying:
“It’s a great honor to know this hospital is named after me. But what’s more important is that we may help many kids and save many lives.”
Madonna also made another heartfelt statement at the ceremony saying this:
"Malawi has enriched my family more than I could have ever imagined. It's important for me to make sure all my children from the country maintain a strong connection to their birth nation, and equally important to show them that together, humans have the power to change the world for the better," she said.
The facility is in Blantyre, Malawi. It has a playroom, outdoor play structure and inspirational murals Madonna picked out herself which were created by artists she invited to the center.
Way to go Madonna!!
